We are developing a LED driver based on Infineon IC ICL5102. We are facing a problem with the burst Mode (BM) operation of the IC.

We want to introduce a BM feature at reduced load condition when we dim the output current by using 1-10V analog Dimming signal. What we have found is that at dimming ( at say 3V dim signal), the unit starts flickering, and the unit operation becomes unstable if we try to use BM operation.

We want to understand how to introduce dimming at lower output current setting, and Is the BM possible under low load condition or not.

Hi,

You are right, unfortunately ICL5102’s burst mode is not designed for dimming.

Actually they could use LCC topology which can dim deeply with very wide load and output voltage.

Design guide is here;

Hi,

The Burst Mode feature for a Half Bridge controller is meant for light load conditions (Dim to off).

Could you let me know what is the source of the dimming signal? How is the dimming provided to the LED loads?

We want to bring in BM mode operation under low load condition. We are not using DIM to OFF feature in our driver so we are not interested in this feature at present.

Let us say my load condition is 700mA, 340V

With Analog Dimming 1-10 volt, we want to reduce the output current from 700mA to 70mA.

We want to bring in the BM at 5V dimming voltage when my load will become 350mA, 340V( approx. voltage).

We want to understand if we can introduce BM at 350mA,340V, as the operating frequency will go very high under lower loads and this will hamper our efficiency badly. By introducing BM, we can avoid operating at higher switching frequency. and hence will improve our efficiency.

This feature is very easily achievable in other brand IC like ST make 6599 or 6699.
