Hi, I was wondering if we could treat the XMC 4800 as a drop in replacement for the XMC 4700 (assuming same package, and memory).

Hi,
XMC 4800 devices has an additional support of Ethercat compared to XMC4700 family devices. See the table from product selection guide (microcontroller section).

If you are searching for specific part drop in replacement, it is better to compare between device type features table of individual part numbers in the datasheet.
Best Regards,
Vasanth
