I'm trying to decide if I can update our CCG3 device through the exposed Type-C port.  Will external hardware be required, or can I connect directly to a PC with a C-to-C cable?

Hi,

External hardware is needed for CC bootloader. Directly connected to a PC will not work. Take CY4532 for example, a USB-Serial Chip and CCG4 is needed to update CCG3PA. CCG3 need similar external hardware to update through CC.

Hi,

To make some supplement, CCG3 integrates a complete full speed USB 2.0 device controller which can be used to update firmware. So if your CCG3 use USB bootloader then it can be update through Type-C port without external hardware. So the answer to your question maybe yes if you use USB bootloader.
