I'm having trouble seeing where the Billboard device functionality is implemented on the CY4541 Evaluation Kit.

CY4541 appears to support Alternate Mode in both direction: Type-C to DP and DP to Type-C.

The above demos allow functional verification of a working interface.

Is there a way to test the fallback function of Billboard when the initial Alternate mode is not accepted?

It appears the CY4531 kit has a Billboard controller embedded in the CCG3.

Reference designs for CCG1 and CCG2 have the external billboard controller CY7C65210

Hi Greg,

1. Your understand is incorrect on CY4541 appears to support Alternate Mode in both direction: Type-C to DP and DP to Type-C. CY4541 support DisplayPort Source regards on hardware limitation.

2. The hardware limitation is PS8740B is fixed direction of Display-port streaming.

3. You are correct that CCG3 has a Billboard controller embedded, but CY4531 is not enabled it. Since CY4531 is assembled CYPD3125 and support I2C bootloading which is not enabled billboard in firmware by default.

4. If you need a single chip and integrate billboard, please kindly use CYPD3123 or CYPD3120.

Best Regards,

Lisa

Lisa,

Thank you for the quick reply.

The CY4541 alone does NOT support Alternate mode as a DisplayPort Source to a HOST due to the lack of a Billboard Controller.

Does Cypress have a standalone CY7C65210 Billboard controller that can interface to the CCG4 device on the CY4541 kit and the USB 2 lines on the USB-C connector to support data into the DisplayPort toward a PC via the USB-C interface?

I.E. How can I test a CCG4 based Display Port to USB-C function where the USB-C side connects to a Host Computer, which will receive the video data?

I now see the Parade PS8740B's fixed direction allows the CY4541 kit to be a DisplayPort Source and NOT a DisplayPort Sink with respect to the USB-C connector.

As a DisplayPort Source, video data flows only into the DisplayPort connector through the switch then out of the USB-C connector on the CY4541 kit.

I now see that video data out the USB-C port is only ever sent to an end device such as a USB-C to Display Port Dongle.

Although physically possible for DisplayPort data to feed into a Host PC from the USB-C connector of the CY4541 kit, that configuration would require a Billboard device in the CY4541 kit, thus connecting to a Host such as a PC when in Alternate Mode is NOT supported on the CY4541 kit.

Please correct me if anything I've stated above is incorrect.

P.S. There's an explanation of Billboard at technical-direct.com that helped me better grasp the Billboard concept

Hi Greg,

Your understand is correct. If your hardware is based on CY4541, the answer is you cannot demonstrate as DisplayPort sink (DisplayPort sink = The DisplayPort flow is from Type-C port to DisplayPort interface.)

For your questions:

Does Cypress have a standalone CY7C65210 Billboard controller that can interface to the CCG4 device on the CY4541 kit and the USB 2 lines on the USB-C connector to support data into the DisplayPort toward a PC via the USB-C interface?

>> CY4541 board do not have a standalone CY7C65210 Billboard controller on it.  If the DisplayPort flow is DisplayPort interface to Type-C port, the default firmware is supported.

I.E. How can I test a CCG4 based Display Port to USB-C function where the USB-C side connects to a Host Computer, which will receive the video data?

>> It is depends on which is DFP when it is attached. Since Host Computer is Dual Role Power (DRP) and DisplayPort source role, and CY4541 is same as Host Computer, it is Dual Role Power (DRP) and DisplayPort source role. But this case will not have chance to successful negotiation for DisplayPort Alt mode, since none of them is supporting AMA.
