We have a project coming in that is essentially two systems: A USB-C Host, and a USB-C Client, the host sourcing +20VDC (25W Max), DisplayPort/HDMI, and USB data lines to the Client over a single USB-C connection.

I'm currently looking at eval kits to replicate this setup so we can get a jump on development.

For the host, the CCG3 CY4531 Evaluation Kit looks to meet our needs, but I have a question as to the Client.  Would a second CY4531 Kit be able to fill the Client role such as is diagrammed below:

What adjustments, if any, would need to be made on our end for this?

Also, as a followup question, In a situation in which there are 2 Client devices, would the CY4541 Kit (CCG4) be able to drive both simultaneously (with PD, DP, and USB) as long as the total power draw is under the 100W PD limit?  Something like this:

Just looking to confirm before dropping $$$ on anything.

Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Hi ,

1. For CCG3 question, the CY4531 client need suit for Power Sink and VIDEO/DATA Sink. Based on currently CY4531 hardware, you cannot evaluate it. The limitation is not CCG3, CCG3 is prefect device for those type application, since CCG3 could working as Power sink and VIDEO/DATA Sink, and offer a Billboard for the design. The limitation on CY4531 hardware side is MUX PS870B is fixed signal transmit, which is not support DP/USB sink data receive. The MUX on CY4531 client shall be PS8742B.

You have to change the hardware as below link to achieve your goal.

CCG3 Type-C receptacle DRP Reference Design (Power source & DisplayPort Sink)

2. For the CCG4 question, the answer is YES. CY4541 Kit (CCG4) is able to drive both simultaneously (with PD, DP, and USB) as long as the total power draw is under the 100W PD limit on each Type-C port. Please kindly notice that CCG4 is dual Type-C ports chip.

Best Regards,

Lisa

Lisa,

Thank you very much for the helpful input!

Can the 4531 Kit be modified in this way to make it a sink (I.E. can we just mod the kit with the correct mux?) or would we have to create our own design based on your posted reference?

Or is there an available kit that could act as a sink out of the box?

The CY4533 looks like it would work to test PD negotiation and consumption, but not the DP or Data connection.

The CY4501 CCG1 kit looks like it would be able to do it, but also looks like it includes both the host and the client sides.

Thanks again for the info!

Hi ,

1. For CY4531 kit, you can.

2. Currently, there is no Cypress official kits could act as a sink out of box.

Lisa,

Sounds great.  We will probably end up going with a CY4541 for the host and a modified CY4531 for the client.

Thanks so much for the answers!
