Hello,

I am a newbie for the cypress EZ-PD and have the CY4502 EVM board to simulate and verify the design concept.

My question is how to simulate the power delivery for Samsung Galaxy S20.  I follows the "CCG2 Single-Chip EMCA Application" from the "EZ-PD™ CCG2 Development Kit Guide".  To emulate the host side - DFP, I built a small circuitry which has a USB C breakout board and the pin D+/D- are soldered to USB type A cable. The other side - UFP is connected to Samsung galaxy S20 USB C port.  The CC1 and CC2 on the DFP side are hooked up to pullup resistor 10Kohm. The LED1 is ON and the VCONN on the J9, pin 10 is connected to VBUS.

Then, the VBUS on the USB C breakout is connected to a lab power supply which is set to 5v as follows.

VBUS -------------------->   USB C

D+/D- <--------------------->  breakout     <----------->  CY4520  <------> Samsung Galaxy S20

10K PU(CC1/CC2)  <--->  board

The issue I encounter is that the phone doesn't draw more than 500mA on the VBUS, which is same power draws without CY4520.

Do I have a mistake to configure it or is the CY4502 not compatible with the phone ?

Hi SK,

When connected to the laptop, could you please provide the PD logs using an analyzer? Please verify if the jumper settings are as mentioned in the DVK Guide for single chip EMCA application and CCG2 is powered i.e. LED1 is on.

By the comment, I meant it could be possible that the Samsung S20 is not seeing valid CC terminations when connected to the breakout board and entering into an implicit Type-C contract that would allow 3A current to be drawn.

Yes, the CY4502 should be compatible since it only acts an EMCA cable and the actual PD contract is between the DFP i.e. HP Probook PC and the Samsung S20. Could you please let us know if you have checked TP1?

The CCG3PA on CY4532 EVK would act as a charger and could be connected to your phone with any cable. So, the CY4532 would act as a DFP source instead of the breakout board/ laptop and not a EMCA cable that the CY4502 EVK is used for.

Hello SK,

The CY4502 DVK is used for operating as an EMCA cable between a PD capable DFP and UFP. From the explanation above, your DFP emulation circuit doesnt have PD capability. So, even though LED1 is ON due to the CCG2 getting powered from the VCONN through J9, the VBUS is just being passed as it is without any Type-C or PD contract with the UFP based on the current drawn.

Please connect appropriate Rp termination on the CC pin of the breakout board that connects to the CC line in the CY4502 DVK and provide 5V on the VCONN line. Please ensure that the jumpers are configured correctly as per section 3.3 in the CY4502 DVK Guide.

I would recommend that you connect to a PD capable host such as laptop first with CY4502 and test the Samsung Galaxy S20 charging.

Thank you for the reply.

As I stated on the the question, the Rp - 10Kohms resistors are populated on both CC1/CC2 and the VCONN pin is tied up with 5V VBUS on the breakout board.  Also, I did hook up the CY4502 and Samsung S20 to my laptop PC - HP Probook. The phone doesn't draw any current and the phone battery is discharged.  The test bed looks like below.

HP Probook USB C <---->  CY4502 <-----> Samsung S20

Regrading your comment - "VBUS is just being passed as it is without any Type-C or PD contract with the UFP based on the current", I am sorry but I don't get what you meant. The VBUS is not controlled by CY4502, but both ends are connected - breakout and Samsung S20 through CY4502 EVM.

The other interesting thing I have experienced is that the Samsung S20 looks like working as a DFP when the lab power supply is OFF.  I can see the LED1 ON and 5v appears on the VBUS.  I am little puzzled with it.

Is the CY4502 compatible with Samsung S20 ? The test bed has worked with TI USB PD EVM board.

I have walked through the documents and checked out the TP(Test Point) on the EVK board again, but I don't find anything.

Does it mean that the CY4502 has the compatible issue with Samsung S20 ?

If yes, what do you recommend among the EZ-PD family ? I found another EVK - CY4532 which has the CCG3PA processor on it.

Does it works with the phone ?

Thank you for the update.

I don't have the protocol analyzer with me but it is on the way to come to me - CY4500 EZ-PD protocol analyzer.

Regarding the TP1, it shows up at 5v as expected.

Is there anything else I can give a try ?

Hi SK,

If TP1 shows 5V, then the first CCG2 should be powered through VCONN1 and LED1 should be on if jumper configuration is correct and firmware is working as expected.

Could you also please test with any other UFP such as a Type-C flash drive or another phone and connect it to the laptop using CY4502? That would help us understand if the DVK is configured correctly. Please also refer to Appendix A in the DVK Guide to help understand the issue.

Thank you for quick response.

I thought of your suggestion - USB C flash to CY4502 and connect to my laptop on the other side. Most of USB C flash is male and CY4502 is also male, so that additional female to females adapter is necessary. I don't think it is good way to evaluate the CY4502.

I am going to stop evaluating the CY4502 and continue working on the  CY4532 EVK once it is delivered to me.
