Hi Infineon experts

I am currently using the BTS50162EKA to control both LED and incandescent automotive hitch lights via a PIC16F microcontroller. I have successfully used the INA219 current sensor to identify when a hitch is attached to the vehicle by measuring the BTS50162EKA output load, however, I understand the BTS5016XXXX is also capable of measuring the current load as per the datasheet. Therefore, to save component qty, cost and PCB space, I am wanting to replace the INA219 and use the in-built current sense function of the BTS5016XXXX via the SENSE (IS) pin of the BTS50162EKA. I am not an electronics engineer and am struggling to interpret the datasheet SENSE pin requirements, connections and resistor values I need in order to make this work. I am fine with any software changes needed, it is the hardware configuration I am having difficulty with.

If anyone is able to assist me in better understanding what considerations, design requirements, or schematic I need in order to measure the BTS50162EKA current load using the SENSE (IS) pin, I would be very grateful.

Many thanks!

Hello,

Yes, you can refer the application diagram in the datasheet and values of Ris and Rsense resistor values (Page 50). The values are recommended considering lifetime reliability recommendation.

If you have question on using Ris values greater than mentioned value, hope this article will be helpful (It is valid for PROFET+12 devices also) : https://community.infineon.com/t5/Knowledge-Base-Articles/Is-it-acceptable-for-the-sense-resistor-va...

For more better understanding of current sense, I am attaching some documents for your reference.

Best Regards,
Anshika
