First question asked Welcome!

Hi,

We have used Part No. BTS3011TEATMA1 in our TMLI_BMSH project.
The project is regarding the BMS for automotive applications.

Our query is to detect the fault/error conditions like

- Over Voltage protection
- Over Current protection
- Over temperature protection.

We want to understand the fault conditions for this part.
We have given voltage up to 60V, Current up to 15 Amp and temperature up to 150 deg. C, but in any of these conditions we are unable to detect any change in the status pin or cutoff of load current.

Please advise, how we can diagnose these fault conditions.

Hello,

Thank you for posting on Infineon Community.

The BTS3011TE switch has integrated protection functions that are designed to prevent IC destruction under fault conditions described in the data sheet. And it provides overvoltage clamping, thermal protection and overcurrent / short circuit limitation.

1. Overvoltage Clamping
-The BTS3011TE is equipped with a voltage clamp circuitry that keeps the drain-source voltage Vds at a certain level Vout(CLAMP) to prevent unwanted high voltages.
For diagnosing the overvoltage, please monitor the Vds voltage and not STATUS pin or load current pin.  As the Vout is taken across Vds of MOSFET, the clamping of voltage will appear across this as can be seen from the below figure (Refer Page number 14,Datasheet).

2. Over-temperature and Overcurrent protection features are inter-related to each other.

G_Anshika_1-1655723951544.png

The range of thermal shutdown temperature is 150 degree to 200 degree. The thermal protection feature will trigger when the device crosses the minimum value, i.e. 150 degree and it could trigger anywhere between 150 deg Celcius to 200 deg Celcius,a particular temperature could not be said. The triggering will cause the output to switch off.

If you are continuously giving the input signal by keeping the IN pin high, the device will again turn on by some time delay know as delayed thermal-restart function. The delay in activation of the device is designed such  that the device will cool down to a proper level before turning it on, and device could operate efficiently.

BTS3011TE device is providing a smart overcurrent limitation intended to provide protection against short circuit conditions while allowing also load inrush currents higher than the current limitation level.  In BTS3011TE,the minimum current limitation trigger level is 70 A. If the load current IL reaches the current limitation trigger level IL(LIM)_TRIGGER, the internal current limitation will be activated and the device limits the current to a lower value IL(LIM). The device then starts heating up. When the thermal shutdown temperature TJ(SD) i.e a temperature beyond 150 degree is reached, the device turns off. The time from the beginning of current limitation until the over temperature switch off depends strongly on the cooling conditions.

The STATUS pin is triggered whenever there is an overtemperature shutdown.

The typical range of load current as given in datasheet is 10 A. It doesn't mean if the current crosses this point as you have mentioned that you are operating the device at 15 A, overcurrent feature will get active.  It can be because of either reasons :

1. Continuously operating at higher value of load current will raise the temperature, that will lead to over temperature shutdown.

2. In case of any inrush current in the system.

Please let me know if you have further queries.

Thanks and Regards,
Anshika
