I am prototyping a product and wonder if drawing on the order of 50mA is acceptable for the board

If you are powering the tag3 via USB, it should be fine. But if you are going to integrate this device into your actual battery-powered product, then your battery will not last long.

The TAG3 uses a XC9236_ADJ (Torex Voltage Regulator) which can drive 600mA.  However, the output current is indeed limited by the input supply.  As Boon states, 50mA shouldn't be an issue but that's quite a bit to draw from a (coin-cell) battery.  If you are powering the board via USB, I would be cautious that you do not violate the USB Specification for Inrush current.  If you do, the host's USB port will not enumerate the device, and may take action to disable the port completely, like when a short exists in the USB cable.  Good luck, and let us know what you are able to "get-away" with when all is said and done.  Thanks.
