I am interested in using the TDA21590 smart power stage primarily for its high continuous current rating of 90A and had a few questions to ask

1- Is there a peak load current rating for this device and if so an you provide details on the testing conditions for this peak rating

2- Is it possible to use this device without utilizing the integrated current/temperature sensing functionality, and if so, are there recommendations for what to do with pins associated with that functionality like IMONREF, IMON, TMON/FLT? For instance, can we simply keep them floating while operating the device normally via the PWM pins?

Hello @hosam99 ,

The part has the OCP limit set at around 112A.

You can operate at currents under the OCP limit provided the junction temperature does not exceed 125 degrees  Celsius and sufficient heat sink, and airflow is maintained to dissipate the heat effectively. 

There should be a 1Kohm resistor between IMON and IMONREF, TMON can be left floating if the integrated current/temperature sensing functionality is not used.

The current rating directly depends on the thermal derating of the part.

Refer to Figure 7 on thermal derating and typical operating conditions mentioned on page 10 of the TDA21590 datasheet.

Can you let us know about the application where you are planning to use our smart power stages?

Thanks for providing clarification on the current rating. In that case, where does the 90A current rating reported in page 6 come from. Does it only apply under ideal conditions and is it safe to assume based on the thermal derating curve that the device is not rated to handle continuous 90A. 

Regarding our application, I can't provide detailed information due to confidentiality reasons. However, I can share that it involves a low-voltage, high-current DC-AC inverter. We are considering this device as a potential candidate to serve as the building block for the individual phase legs.
