Hello Graham,

You are right about ALE not requiring PHY update. And it should be on the cards of our next major stack update. However, it is not simply extending advertising packets to the PHY's max capability. As there are certain rules imposed on the adv. packet in BLE transmitted in the adv. channels. ALE feature extends the advertising data to data channels as well and would require some good amount of stack update and testing. Hence for the first release of PSoC 6 BLE stack, we did not consider ALE.

Regarding Long Range, again you are right it would make sense to use an external PA if absolute range increase is desired. And we do support External PA and LNA (Low-noise Amplifiers for Rx). That is the reason why we dint consider the PHY update to include the new optional LE Coded block in the first release of PSoC 6 BLE radio. Again, the LR does not simply work by sending data 4 times. It performs a lower packet coding and an increased Tx power up to +20 dBm, to achieve the long range support.

Hi,

Out of the three key features (2 Mbps, Adv Length Extension and Long range) in BLE 5.0 Spec, we support the 2 Mbps feature only in PSoC 6.

Does support the features of adv length extension and long range in the future?

Unfortunately, we do not have plans to support them in PSoC 6. But this will be considered when we plan to upgrade the BLE radio in PSoC 6.

Oh my god,It was lost to hear the news,if upgrade the BLE radio in PSoC 6,Only update the protocol stack can achieve the other two features?PHY has been supporting Bluetooth 5.0?

Yes, as I mentioned only the 2 Mbps feature from 5.0 spec is supported in the BLE PHY. Both ALE and LR requires a PHY upgrade.

Having said that our IoT BCMxxxxx family for BLE, will add the support for the full BLE 5.0 spec in future.

Because this future can be a year, two years or even more years,so……

Would ALE really require a PHY change? if the PHY can send packets of up to XX bytes surely the advertising packet could be extended to at least the same xx bytes. it's not a raw throughput issue if that's the case just a stack implementation.

For Long Range, which my understanding is the same data sent 4 times, there is no guarantee that this would be received by a node further away. is the better option not putting an external PA to boost the power, send the data once, and have lower average power this way?

thanks
