I'm wondering wha this 'x16' in the middle of the 4 UDBs is supposed to mean... And what 'SMX' in the analog section stands for.

If its a $ 1.00 part we could probably assume (with < 100% certainty) that X 16 does

   

not mean 16 UDBs. Maybe each UDB is a 16 bit element/datapath ?

 I think it means the PSOC line will have up to 16 x UDBs.

   

with the smallest one having only have 4 UDBs

I don't know, the PSOC 3/5 being a $ 5 - $ 12 part, with 16 UDBs, does not

   

add up to a $ 1 part. Did M3 core dominate die area of PSOC 5, that would

   

be unusual I think.

But The $1 dollar part only needs to have 4 UDBs.

   

The 16UDB PSOC 4 could cost even more than entry level PSOC5s.

 What i think is that the bottom of the line PSOC4 will e the one with only 4UDB at $1 while medium range and top of the linebe priced at $2 - $8 with more UDBs, overlaping PSOC3 and PSOC5 cost.

   

Therefore a designer with a simple application could choose the lowest priced mcu and then have a choose betwing PSOC3/PSOC4/PSOC5 as his application grows, depending on hes needs of resources and performance.

I think I'm going to order a brand new crystal ball from my earned community points to have all those suspections cleared at once.  Cypress will, as other companies have done before, wait for the demands of the customers having placed orders in  the k's amount and talk to  their engineers. Of course everyone of us would deeply fall in love with a PSoC4 having 24 (or more) UDBs for just a buck. And if it was 2$ we would love it, too! But I think that the pricing is not realistic and competitors with FPGAs are close at Cypress's heels. Recently I was announced an M0 chip with ahhh.... hmmm..., well the basic model seemed to be something rather naked, there was a communication interface and a handfull of programmable pins for 1$. There the PSoC4 is quite a leap into my preferred direction.

I should clarify that the block diagram, rough pricing, and schedule describe different members of the PSoC 4 family. A detailed read of the document should provide more reliable insight.

1024 UDBs? Nobody will by FPGAs then, you can do anything with that 🙂

FYI - The "SMX" in the PSoC 4 architecture block diagram in the first post is the "SAR ADC MUX".

   

 

   

 

   

More official information will be released with product datasheets and specifications very shortly!

You might be able to subsribe over at element14, but I did not look into that. AFAIK you cannot subscribe here at Cypress - you just should look maybe once a week...

You can also contact local Cypress sales office or local FAE and

   

indicate your interest in PSOC 4. It might be possible to get additional

   

info under NDA, although looks like release is imminent, so that might

   

be pointless.

   

 

   

Additionally Cypress distriubutors and their FAEs are possible sources.

   

 

   

Lastly in order to support the PSOC 4 board the Cypress Update (Software)

   

manager will invoke an update of Creator and probably Programmer to

   

support PSOC 4, so make sure you have Update Manager installed.

So the 4400 series seems to be the one with the many UDBs. But I wonder what "performance analog" means. Do we get just a second SAR ADC, or is there more interesting analog stuff in the pipeline?

Nice find. 4100 is just another mcu. The 4400 will the psoc to look up to.

   

I'm also wondering about the CY8C51LPxx, hope it finds a good price/features tradeoff

Not exactly, you have to look at the device as a whole.
I opened up a 4100 in Creator, created 4 32 bit counters,
timing > 30 Mhz (not sure about this as enable timing,
if used as a F cntr not shown).

   



32 bit multiplier, not too shabby in a ~ $1 part.

   



The 12 bit SAR with automated mux/sampling engine front end.
I would bet a lot of DelSig designs that are configed for 16
bits are actually 10 - 12 bits when a total error analysis is
done, over temp.

   



So I recommend take a closer look, use Creator to play with
it, should lead you quickly to see 4100 can do a lot of stuff
for a $1.
