After installing a FM24CL16B in a DS3231 replacing an EEPROM where power is 5V, I noticed the datasheet state this fram should work at 3.6 volt
Could this IC work with 5 V supply or should I expect a shorter operating life.
Thanks.

Hi,
We can suggest you to not use the 3.6 V rated part for this application. 5V is outside the operating range of the device and the device performance and reliability will be affected. You can use a 5V rated FRAM part instead.
Also we will not be able to comment as to what exactly will happen with the 3.6V rated part because we do not have any sort of test data with us at that voltage. We can only add that we cannot guarantee datasheet listed performance and life for the current fram. It may work it may not work. Operating life will be lower than expected as you have already commented.
Thanks,
Pradipta.
