Hi

Thanks for posting on the Infineon Community.

The main function of Automotive lighting is to enhance visibility, illuminate the interior, and also provide a warning to other vehicles. Automotive Lighting is categorized into two types namely exterior lighting and interior lighting. Exterior consists of Headlights, Fog lights, Taillights, sidelights, center high mount stop lights, etc. whereas Interior light consists of Reading lights, Dome lights, Dashboard, etc. There are different technologies used for these applications which are as follows

  • Halogen Lamps
  • Xenon Lamps
  • LED Lights
  • Matrix LED
  • OLED
  • Laser Lighting

Among all the technologies LED consumes, less energy compared to other lights and it provides the highest luminous efficiency of 80-110 lumens per watt. LEDs provide various manipulation for shapes and designs. The design is compact. It has the longest lifetime of approximately 50000 hours. However, LED is more expensive than other technologies due to the used materials. LEDs are rapidly gaining popularity as their cost decreases and performance increase.

Matrix LED, OLED, and laser lighting are some of the new and promising technologies for automotive lighting applications.

The cost of lighting in a car is approximately 1.5-3% of the total cost of a car.
