Handling Precautions for CY4501 CCG1 DVK
Does CY4501 CCG1 DVK have any handling precautions?
Yes. The following precautions for handling must be observed during operation of CY4501 CCG1 DVK. Failure to comply with these precautions could result in damage to the DVK.
1. Use USB-IF certified Type-C cables
When you use non-compliant Type-C cables, some of them have the VCONN pin (on the Type-C plug) short to Ground. If you connect such cables to the CCG1 host or client board, you will short the VCONN pin on board (5 V) to Ground. Note that there is no over current protection available on the VCONN circuit and the power circuitry may get damaged on the board. VCONN FET Q9 on the host board and Q7-Q8 on the client board are prone to damage. The VCONN FETs are capable of handling 400 mA of current and any current above this threshold will damage the VCONN FET permanently.
As a precautionary measure always use USB-IF certified Type-C cables. While using non-certified cable physically measure the short between VCCON pin and the Ground. Do not use the cable, if the short is present.
2. Unplug the Type-C connector on the board while programming
The CCG1 host board and the client board are factory programmed. Care should be taken while reprogramming the board. Before reprogramming the host board, ensure that there is nothing connected on the Type-C connector. There is a possibility that you might want to perform power delivery (PD) testing with Type-C power adaptors and the host board. Care should be taken to ensure that the power adapter is disconnected while performing any firmware (FW) upgrade. During PD contract, there is a possibility to get more than 5 V from the VBUS of the Type-C connector and this can get connected to the local rail V5P0 during the programming. Local rail V5P0 is connected to U3 Type-C controller and other peripherals on the board and any voltage higher than 5 V will damage the U3 (Type-C controller) and other peripherals.
3. Hold the Type-C connectors on the board
The Type-C connectors on the host or client board are delicate and should be used with care. While connecting and disconnecting the Type-C cable or devices, hold the CCG1 board and slowly plug the cable or device without wiggling it. This will reduce the stress on the Type-C connector and helps to provide reliable connection. If the Type-C connector is not handled properly, the connector may snap-off.
