1EDNx550B is an optimized driving solution for kelvin source based 4-pin MOSFETs or simple MOSFETs in noisy environments (e.g. long PCB traces). In those cases, dynamic noise is existing between the driver ground and the microcontroller ground; 1EDNx550B is able to filter up to 150V peak dynamic noise representing a compact and low-cost alternative to 2EDFx (that is isolated, then more bulky and expensive).
Moreover, thanks to high common-node rejection capability, 1EDNx550B is also suitable as high-side driver; 2x1EDNx550B can be used for half-bride driving as demonstrated in the application note at the following link https://www.infineon.com/dgdl/Infineon-ApplicationNote_evaluation_board_EVAL_HB_BC_1EDN8550B-AN-v03_... here.
However, 1EDNx550B common mode rejection is limited and it can work for half bridge driving only in LV and MV applications. 72V DC GND robustness is specified in the datasheet that means, considering a 12V supply for the driver, 2x1EDNx550B can be used in LV brick up to 60V max input; this is true when 3.3V PWM is applied and 0.1% tolerance 33KΩ resistances are placed on the input pins externally. However, for different PWM levels and different resistances (that must be selected accordingly as specified in the datasheet) the input common mode rejection can even increase up to 200V.
With proper attention, 2x1EDN7550xB can then be used as half bridge in MV application, but no more. In 400V PFC, for example in the Vienna Rectifier, 1EDN8550B is not enough; an high-voltage level shifter or 2EDFx must be used.
