Benefit of ICL8800/ICL8810/ICL8820 Secondary Side Regulation (SSR) (KA-03350)
The transformer of the SSR flyback is easier to design compared to PSR, since the whole control strategy does not rely on good coupling in all operating conditions. The SSR directly measures the output voltage and has, therefore, no output voltage drift nor does it require a bleeder. This makes it easier to use in low-dimming applications, it reduces bill of material and standby losses.
For pure on/off drivers or drivers with a dimming level of around 5%, the PSR flyback is a good option, since the cost for the optocoupler can be saved. No matter which choice you make for the topology, the ICL88xx family supports you in achieving the best price-performance ratio for you.
