Question 1: Is the voltage stress experienced by the IGBT related to time? If VCE's voltage spike lasts only 1us, or is 10ns a threat to IGBT?

Question 2: Based on the above, I am measuring the IGBT voltage peak value of a product. What is the bandwidth of the device to collect the Vce voltage waveform?

Hello ,

Is the voltage stress experienced by the IGBT related to time? In extreme tests, it was found that there is a relationship between voltage stress and time. Occasional overrated voltage spikes will not necessarily damage IGBT, but if excessive voltage spikes are repeated over a long period of time, IGBT will definitely be damaged.

In the design and use of power supply products, it should be considered that the voltage spike should not exceed the maximum voltage of VCE under any circumstances, and even leave a certain margin (reduction). In some companies' power supply product designs, the design specifications clearly stipulate that the voltage spike must not exceed the value after the reduction. The maximum withstand voltage value of VCE is also the voltage value of breakdown. Once the voltage spike is caught, it will definitely be repeated throughout the service life, and there is a risk of damage, so please comply with the voltage requirements and corresponding derating design specifications in the product usage specifications.

Question 2: Based on the answer to question 1, during development and testing, it should be guaranteed that excessive usage will not occur. The oscilloscope bandwidth should be as large as possible. In actual use, at least 20MHZ bandwidth should be selected. If conditions permit, it is best to use 1GHZ.
