Hi, could you please tell me why to use IGBTs with short circuit capability? What exactly do you mean with short circuit?

Hi Max,
short circuit is required in all the applications where external influences can harm the 'normal' functional behavior of the power electronic system.
As an example, in three-phase motor drives applications, the failure of the motor winding insulation can create a short between the phases, or a failure between a phase and the motor casing that is connected to earth.
A good explanation of the meaning of the short circuit can be found at the section 2.3 of this application note: https://www.infineon.com/dgdl/Infineon-AN_201814_Trenchstop_1200V_IGBT7-AN-v01_00-EN.pdf?fileId=5546....

Giuseppe
