The dream: Secure, reliable connectivity & universal interoperability in my smart home

Wouldn't it be great if all your smart home devices could talk to each other? You could then ask Alexa to have your Nespresso machine brew a shot espresso and check your packages at the same time. Sounds dreamy? With Matter, a royalty-free home automation connectivity standard, this is reality. Your device can talk to each other using a unified language. This standard will improve interoperability, security, and ease-of-use across your smart home devices, regardless of who makes the device and what underlying connectivity technology it uses. We're in the early phase of what Matter will be capable of doing, initial support will be provided on Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Thread.

This two-part blog post walks you through tips, helpful technical resources and some Matter-enabled products that help consumers, engineers, developers and manufacturers to set up Matter-enabled devices quickly and easily in the smart home. In our post #2 next week, we'll show a use case that also will be at Embedded World 2022, booth #: 138 in hall 4A.

How does Matter work for the consumer?

Set-up will be simple and quick because devices will be compatible. How easy will it be? Check this out:

  1. When the consumer buys a device with Matter standard, like a coffeemaker, that device comes preloaded with related software and a set of credentials that prove its unique identity and certification status.
  2. To add a device to your home, scan a QR code with your phone and press the pairing button in the device.
  3. Your phone will verify the device’s initial credentials and set it up on your network.
  4. Finished! Your new coffeemaker is online and ready to go! You can control it with your phone, your smart speakers or other devices in your home.

How do manufacturers, developers and engineers benefit, set up and implement Matter-enabled devices?

Matter is an open- source development approach, so it makes things easy to develop. The standard is designed by Connectivity Standards Alliance and 400+ industry-leading technology companies such as Amazon, Google, Infineon, NXP and more, who are creating and manufacturing these devices worldwide. They have a vested interest in making this standard work and understand the challenges facing the smart home market.

To help manufacturers, developers and engineers set up Matter, CSA offers a GitHub repository with documents and source code to help set up Matter--and you don't need to be a GitHub member to use it. There is also a Matter forum in this repository with developers and engineers like you answering questions and working together on new ways to solve the current and future technology challenges.

How do Infineon’s Matter-Enabled products help?

Infineon brings 30+ years of experience as a global supplier to IoT companies of all sizes and works with 300 industry-leading partners worldwide. So, we understand that our Matter-enabled IoT solutions need to be reliable, secure, and easy to implement, and you can get products to market faster.

Our security chips help make Matter work. The PSoC™ 6x ULP Secure Sensor Fusion MCU and OPTIGA™ security solutions are designed for easy integration into embedded systems to protect the confidentiality, integrity and authenticity of information and devices. These robust hardware-based security solutions scale from basic authentication chips to sophisticated implementations. They enable smaller, more power- efficient and less expensive designs for use in very small IoT applications, yet still provide secured identity credentials and cryptographic functions required for IoT networks including random number generators encryption/decryption, signing and verification.

The high-performance, low-power AIROC™ CYW30739 multi-protocol SoC (BT5.0, 802.15.4) supports Matter over Thread on edge devices. This SoC works for smart lighting, smart access, smart building and smart sensor applications or any application that requires low power consumption and extended battery life.

The AIROC™ CYW43xx SoC also is a Bluetooth ®/Wi-Fi solution that supports Matter over Wi-Fi with easy support for provisioning over Bluetooth®/Bluetooth® Low Energy. This solution is ideal for smart appliance, smart thermostat and smart access applications.

Infineon ModusToolbox™ software and tools helps developers accelerate the deployment of Matter products by enabling faster development of Infineon MCUs. The software and tools work on embedded sense and control products and wireless and cloud-connected systems using AIROC™ Wi-Fi, AIROC™ Bluetooth® and AIROC™ Wi-Fi+combo devices.
